Contemporary roofing solution for a new community hub

Designed in collaboration with young people in the local area, this modern community hub demanded a high specification roofing solution which could also be used on the building’s façades.

All exterior elevations and the roof used Marley Eternit’s Thrustone Fibre Cement Slates to maximise visual impact, contrasting the contemporary dark grey against timber. As well as being lightweight, the building material also has sustainable properties, being 100% recyclable and contributing to the build’s BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

Slates had to be measured out precisely so they all lined up, paying particular attention to spacing. Copper rivits were used to fix the slates in place.

Key Concepts Explored

The team worked diligently with the site manager and contracts manager to make sure construction activities were coordinated so the project could be completed on time.

The project was awarded the prestigious RIBA Journal MacEwen Award which celebrates architecture for the ‘common good’ and also featured in Marley Eternit’s marketing brochure
