Heritage Roof Refurbishment with Natural Slates and Traditional Leadwork
R J Collins Roofing successfully completed a full roof refurbishment at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, a listed building requiring careful attention to detail and heritage preservation.
The project involved the complete strip of the existing roof, followed by the installation of new felt and battens to create a secure and durable foundation. The roof was then finished with new natural slates, carefully selected to match the original materials and maintain the building’s historic character.
Specialist leadwork formed a key part of the refurbishment, including the installation of traditional mop rolled gulley systems, as well as new hips, ridge details, and flashings. These elements were crafted to deliver both long-term weather protection and a finish in keeping with the building’s listed status.

Roof Refurbishment in a Fully Operational Healthcare Environment
All works were carried out while the hospital remained fully operational, requiring careful planning, strict safety measures, and minimal disruption to day-to-day activities.
The project was delivered to a high standard, preserving the heritage of the building while providing a robust, modern roofing system designed for longevity and performance.
